Amos Badertscher Resume

Amos Badertscher was an American photographer known for chronicling the Baltimore subculture and hustler scene primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. After his first sexual encounter with a man when he was twenty-fours years old, Baderstcher looked to photography to capture those living alternative lifestyles, from hustlers to drug addicts, without any moralizing. A self-taught artist and fan of literature, Badertscher looked to artists like David Hockney, and read widely from Homer to William Blake. These influences are present throughout his oeuvre, as he wrote on nearly all the prints of his photographs, including narratives, histories, and poems about the subjects. He reworked many of these stories in the last two decades of his life.
