Lissa Rivera’s solo exhibition of “Beautiful Boy” opened this week at the Millbrook School’s Warner Gallery in Millbrook, New York:
Based in Brooklyn, NY, photographer Lissa Rivera combines her interest in the social history of photography with ideas surrounding sexuality and gender. Much of Rivera’s work focuses on the strength and power of the visual language of femininity, which impacts generations and can be traced through popular culture and art history.
The current exhibition, Beautiful Boy, involves Rivera’s partner, BJ Lillis, in a poignant collaboration. Together, Rivera and Lillis create photographs that explore identity in art. These images show a genderqueer individual in feminine clothing surrounded by beautiful colors and tones. The work suggests that binary gender is not an essential component of beauty.
