David Leddick writes: “[George Platt Lynes’s] photograph of John Ferencz becoming a tree may have some relationship to the story of the nymph who becomes a tree in order to escape her pursuer. The effect was accomplished simply by having the model pose behind a stark fragment of tree limb and removing, by retouching, the half of his lower body that protruded beyond the tree on one side.”
