Influenced by the historical use of collage in queer art, this work mixes the sublime with the sociopolitical. Gay beefcake photos are collaged and painted into Arcadian landscapes that are dissolving into abstraction. Lurking in these idylls are media photos of government-sanctioned attacks on LGBTQ+ people from all over the world. The artists’ aim is to create a seductive and provocative surface that belies its cautionary message—like a candy with a poison center.
