Dogs, cats, goats, horses, cows — really, all manner of critters — have become a strong presence in social media environments like Instagram and Twitter. In many cases, animal-related sites have tens of thousands of followers. But the images on those sites are almost without exception precious looks at young animals, with an emphasis on cuteness. Much as with American human pop culture, which seems to favor youth, it’s unusual to see animals portrayed in advanced age. With that in mind, fine art photographer Isa Leshko set out to depict elderly animals that have been rescued from neglect and abuse.
