Ever since Trump’s election, there’s been a lot of talk about feminism and the importance of visibility. Brooklyn non-profit, SaveArtSpace, is taking that literally. For their latest initiative, the group has put together an all-new art show and public art installation. Curated by Meryl Meisler, Marie Tomanova, Alyse Archer-Coité, Sandra Hong and Brittany Natale, The Future is Female brings together works by 10 multi-disciplinary artists that explore changing definitions of femininity and the reclamation of womanhood through the female gaze. Featuring pieces by Allie Kelley, Beth Brown, Elise Peterson, Fanny Allié, Jess Whittam, Julie Orlick, Lissa Rivera, Mónica Félix, Nina Summer and Sara Meadows, the exhibition will also be accompanied by a large-scale installation, posting feminist art in 18 phone booths and two billboards across the city. Focused on showcasing femme identities, both the exhibition and installation articulate the challenges of being a woman or non-binary person today. And while Trump and his lackeys try to erase us, this project gives us a voice—and a platform, so if Trump’s in New York, he won’t be able to look away.
