The artist writes: “The portrait of Trash [taken in 1994], who was my roommate at the time, was shot in my living room at 188 S. Catalina Street, also known as Casa de Estrogen for the large amount of lesbians living in the place. Trash, now known as Tre, was a brilliant performer both on screen and in the clubs at the time in LA. I had started making portraits of my community in 1992 and continued the series to around 1995, photographing friends, both in Los Angeles and San Francisco. For everyone who sat for me a print was gifted to them out of the edition and not signed. This was my gift to them personally for trusting me with their image.”
