For 11 years, photographer Robin Schwartz has created portraits of her daughter Amelia meeting animals. The images range from the serene, Amelia quietly napping with her cat, to the bizarre, Amelia surrounded by a clutch of kangaroos, but each is a fascinating exploration of the relationship between humans and animals.
“My daughter and I share an affinity with the animal kingdom and we play out our fantasies and explore our eccentricities by creating fables where animals co-exist and interact as full partners in our invented world,” Schwartz wrote about the project. “Photography gives us the opportunity to access our dreams.”
A collection of Schwartz’s photographs of Amelia were published by Aperture in 2008 and a second book is expected in fall 2014. A selection of the work is currently on view at THE FENCE, an outdoor photographic installation in Brooklyn, N.Y.
