Sarah Charlesworth (1947–2013) was a prominent American conceptual artist and a key member of the “Pictures Generation,” a group of artists who emerged in the 1970s concerned with how images shape our culture. Charlesworth is known for her conceptually-driven, photo-based works that meticulously deconstruct and subvert media imagery. In series like “Modern History,” she would re-photograph newspaper front pages, removing all text to highlight the power of the images alone. Her later work, such as “Objects of Desire,” saw her isolating images of single objects against brightly colored, monochrome backgrounds, creating a dialogue about consumerism, desire, and the constructed nature of visual culture. Her innovative approach to photography has made her an influential figure in contemporary art.
