ARTIST

Huck Snyder was a visual artist and set designer who was part of the 1980s East Village art scene in New York. His simple, sometimes surrealist sets and stage furniture were experimental and unique. He collaborated with such artists as John Kelly, Bill T. Jones, Bart Cook, and Ishmael Houston-Jones.

Snyder was a bold painter. Working fast and loose with a manic yet lyrical intensity evidenced in his brushwork and draftsmanship, he also employed unique methods of framing, taping the edges of his “glass pieces” and painting on these borders with private patterns, words, and symbols.

He exhibited his work extensively in New York at Pier 34 (David Wojnarowicz and Mike Bidlo’s experimental project space) and at the groundbreaking gallery Civilian Warfare.

Snyder died of AIDS-related complications in 1993 at the age of 39.
