Peter Stackpole was an American photojournalist. He was one of the first staff photographers at Life and remained with the publication until 1961. He was responsible for twenty-six cover portraits for the magazine.
Stackpole first gained notice for his photographs of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930s. In the 1930s and 40s, he was busy shooting notable film stars on assignment. During World War II, his combat camera work during the Battle of Saipan was praised.
