Pavel Tchelitchew was a Russian-born painter, set designer, and costume designer, who is often associated with the surrealists and magic realists. He was one of the most celebrated artists of his day. His long-time partner was Charles Henri Ford, and he knew George Balanchine, Lincoln Kirstein, Paul Cadmus, and many other significant members of the creative community of the era.
