This photograph is from a series of images of some of the last bathhouses in Los Angeles.

This piece was shot during a thesis project in which the artist was exploring sites in Los Angeles and Altadena connected to a queer relative’s passing, making speculative gestures at their shared histories despite never having met. One of these sites was a bathhouse near downtown. Stewart rented a room and made portraits in the mirror-paneled walls. What appears to be a window is actually a television. The light leaks are intentional but not controlled; the artist is using an imperfect camera he obtained as a teenager he never had repaired. Sometimes he can get a perfect exposure, but he enjoys the unpredictability of light intervening.
