Touched By The Artist

Janine Antoni is a contemporary artist celebrated for her unique approach to sculpture and performance. Born in the Bahamas in 1964, she received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Antoni’s practice is characterized by her use of her own body as a tool to transform everyday materials into powerful works of art. In her renowned piece, Gnaw (1992), she gnawed on blocks of chocolate and lard to create lipstick and heart-shaped containers, while for Loving Care (1993), she used her own hair, soaked in hair dye, to mop the floor of a gallery. Her work consistently explores themes of identity, femininity, and the relationship between the body and the artwork, often challenging conventional notions of art-making. Antoni has been widely exhibited at prestigious institutions globally and is a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.
