Don Herron earned both his B.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught studio art in the 1970s. After moving to San Francisco, he began photographing performers, artists, nightclubbers, and misfits in bathtubs, inspired by medieval sculptures in niches. Though largely self-taught, his work appeared in important publications such as New York Magazine, The Village Voice, and Artforum. In 1978, Herron moved to New York joining the East Village art scene and continuing his bathtub series.
