The artwork displayed on the wall in the background is a reproduction of Jeune homme nu assis au bord de la mer [Boy Sitting by the Sea], 1856, by Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864). Flandrin applied the style Ingres invented for portraying nude women to a male adolescent. Ingres lived a generation earlier than Flandrin.
