Öyvind Fahlström (1928-1976) was a Brazilian-born Swedish artist, writer, and a pioneer of multimedia art. Known for his politically charged and playful work, Fahlström gained prominence in the 1960s after moving to New York City. His art is distinguished by its use of pop imagery, comic strip aesthetics, and a “variable” format, where viewers could physically rearrange elements like magnetic shapes on a metal board. This interactive approach was central to his goal of critiquing Cold War-era politics and consumer culture. His extensive body of work includes paintings, sculptures, films, and poetry, all reflecting his unique and multidisciplinary approach.
