This image of a young man holding and kissing a maternity bust from the Lega is part of John Edmonds’s series “A Sidelong Glance”—an ongoing body of work in which he examines and reconsiders the role of African art in art history and visual culture at large. Through his meticulously crafted studio photography of Black models and objects representing Africa, he carefully contemplates what it means to be Black, human, and the subject of art and imaging.
