In 1972, Henry Horenstein photographed the weekly stock car races and events at Thompson Speedway in Thomson, Connecticut. Horenstein’s pictures preserve a distinct moment in American culture, capturing what the world looked like in small-town New England in 1972. The pictures, recently rediscovered by the artist, were published by STANLEY/BARKER in a 2022 monograph entitled Speedway 1972.
Horenstein says of the series: “There had to be good pictures there for a wanna-be historian-with-a-camera. What better than an old-school sport that would certainly be extinct one day?”
