ARTIST

Arthur B. Davies’s mystical, mysterious, pastoral paintings hearken back to 19th-century romanticism, even while the artist aligned himself with American artists advancing the most radical ideals of their day. He is known as a member of The Eight—a group of eight American artists who exhibited together in 1908. The Eight are generally regarded as a key part of the Ashcan School movement, known for their realist depictions of urban life in New York City. Bowen’s work, however, set him thematically and stylistically apart from these peers.
