Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) was an American photographer acclaimed for her compassionate and unflinching documentary work. Over a career spanning five decades, she created iconic photo essays on subjects ranging from street children in Seattle to patients in mental health institutions, while also working as a renowned portraitist and film set photographer. Her work has been widely published and is held in major museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; and Getty Museum.
