Purple Bathroom with Close Up of Couple and Plant

Christian Holstad is an American artist living in and working in New York. “Holstad belongs to a generation of heirs to aborted revolutions, confused movements and mixed messages,” writes a Frieze profile. “(A) generation born amid sexual liberation and chemical exploration but that grew up with ‘Just Say No’ and AIDS.” His work tries to stake out a counterculture in a new generation, by taking on themes of sexuality, desire, and identity. Holstad’s work spans across all media—from textiles and photography to site-specific installations and performances—and has been exhibited at SFMOMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
