Still Life with Bird

Stuart Carson Edie (1908–1974) was an American painter and art educator born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute under Thomas Hart Benton and also attended the Art Students League in New York. Edie was an instructor at the American Artists School from 1940 to 1951 and at the University of Iowa from 1944 to 1970. His work, which is considered modernist, included landscapes, still lifes, and figure paintings. Edie participated in the WPA Federal Art Project, for which he created a mural study. His work was exhibited at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and is held in the collections of institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
