ARTIST

Thomas Demand (b. 1964) is a German sculptor and photographer celebrated for his unique conceptual art that blurs the lines between reality and artifice. He meticulously reconstructs three-dimensional, life-sized models of historically significant or newsworthy locations out of colored paper and cardboard. These meticulously crafted, yet subtly flawed, models are then photographed with a large-format camera. Demand’s final works, the photographs themselves, are a commentary on the role of media and memory in shaping our perception of the world. After being photographed, the paper models are destroyed, leaving only the image as a lasting record. His work can be found in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.
