Christopher Makos is an American photographer and visual artist known for his sharp, stylish images of queer icons, pop figures, and the male body. He grew up in California and briefly apprenticed for Man Ray in Paris before becoming a close friend and collaborator of Andy Warhol. Warhol called him “the most modern photographer in America.” Through his “IN” column for Interview Magazine, Makos went on to become one of the key documentarians of New York’s underground scene in the 1970s and ’80s, capturing the city’s nightlife, its personalities, and the energy of the evolving art world.
