Billy Sullivan (b. 1946, Brooklyn NY) is an American painter and photographer. His body of work consists of ephemeral events captured from his point of view, serving as a window into his personal life. The art historian William J. Simmons has said of Sullivan’s work, “Sullivan combines a Warholian world, wherein the archiving of life is so second-nature and immediate as to defy theorization, with an intensely rigorous excavation and recombination of past avant-gardes.” Sullivan’s diaristic tendencies evoke a sense of familiarity, with their candid subjects and expressive brushwork.
