In the late 1980s as the numbers of AIDS-related deaths were increasing exponentially in the United States, the threat of heterosexual AIDS was circulated to create fear in the general population in hopes of increased spending on AIDS services. The most widely disseminated of these fictionalized scare stories was that of AIDS Mary.
