Amy Stein says: “The stories were often just a starting point on the path to the final image. In many cases the story details I had access to were very spare or rough, just a few lines in the local newspaper or police blotter or a quickly recounted memory told to me by a local resident. But I found these broad strokes enough to inspire the general theme and eventually the details of the image, which I was more than happy to fill in. I consider the images in the series to be fictions based on facts.”
